Does Tai Chi help patients duffering from neuropathy?
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a 6-week (3 one hour sessions / week) Tai Chi training program on the physical function of peripheral neuropathy. In the pilot study six volunteers followed the program, and the outcome was evaluated with the help of some nice techniques.
The sensation of 5 foot sole locations was tested by using a 5.07 gauge monofilament. Furthermore Peak torques during maximum isokinetic (60 deg/s) knee extension (KE) and flexion (KF) on a dynamometer were used to examine knee joint strength. We will not bother you with details here.
There were also specific measures to get an idea whether the patients gained anything:
Postural balance was measured: – average velocity (VEL) and 95% area (AREA) of the center of pressure movement during 5-sec of eyes-closed quiet standing. Functional mobility was assessed: – 6-minute walk (6MW) distance. And Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) was measured.
The results were that this Modified Tai Chi training can improve foot sole sensation, balance and functional mobility in this population.

This site helps patients and treating physicians, neurologists, anesthesiologists and other pain specialists to find the best and most up to date research findings related to neuropathy and neuropathic pain and the treatment thereof.
In our centre we are specialised in treating patients suffering from neuropathic pain and neuropathy following an Integrated Medicine concept. Part of our activities are within the field of consultation. We assist pharmaceutical companies in R&D strategies related to finding new drugs to treat neuropathic pain and neuropathy.
