Neuropathic pain treatment in clinical practice is a challenge.
Even with well-established neuropathic pain medications:
- effectiveness is unpredictable,
- achievement of the effective dose can be complicated,
- the onset of analgesia is frequently delayed, and
- different side effects are common.
Consequently there is no way to predict the possible outcome of a particular therapy. Although there are many available pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches, it has been estimated that sufficient pain relief is obtained in only about one-half of neuropathic pain patients.
